WEG SSW900 Soft Starter 10-1400A 220-575V 690V Motor Starter
The WEG SSW900 is WEG's next-generation advanced solid-state soft starter (RVSS - reduced voltage soft starter), rated from 10 to 1400 A and covering 6 to 1000 HP motors at 380 V. It raises motor terminal voltage progressively through firing-angle control of antiparallel thyristors, holding starting current and torque within a set limit. This eliminates the grid and mechanical shock of direct-on-line (DOL) starting and extends the service life of the motor, gearbox, belts and bearings.
An internal AC1 run bypass is standard. Once starting is complete the thyristors are automatically shorted by the bypass contactor, so no additional losses or heat are generated in run mode - and no external bypass contactor is needed, saving both panel space and component cost. The main supply is available on two voltage platforms: T5 at 220-575 V AC and T6 at 575-690 V AC, covering the main industrial grids from North American 230/460/575 V through Eurasian 380/400/690 V. The SSW900 requires no current derating up to 55 °C, so hot workshops and tropical projects need no oversized selection for temperature rise.
For control and maintenance, the SSW900 provides a detachable graphical HMI (parameter copy/download, Bluetooth and front-panel USB) and a battery-backed real-time clock that timestamps every event and fault log. Two independent expansion slots combined with embedded SoftPLC allow logic programming on board, reducing dependence on an upstream PLC. Communication options include RS485, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS-DP, EtherNet/IP, Modbus-TCP and PROFINET IO. The unit is built with lead-free processes and conformal-coated circuit boards, compliant with RoHS, for dusty, humid and corrosive environments. Frames A and B mount on DIN rail or by screws.

Hot workshops and tropical projects - the 55 °C no-derating rating is a decisive advantage
Retrofit projects - DIN rail or screw mounting to replace an existing DOL starter panel
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is RVSS, and where does the SSW900 fit?
RVSS stands for reduced voltage soft starter. The SSW900 is WEG's next-generation advanced solid-state soft starter. It progressively raises motor terminal voltage through firing-angle control of antiparallel thyristors, limiting starting current to a set range - replacing direct-on-line starting as well as traditional reduced-voltage methods such as star-delta and autotransformer starters.
Q2. Do I need an additional bypass contactor?
No. An internal AC1 run bypass is standard on the SSW900. Once starting completes, the thyristors are automatically bypassed, so no additional losses or heat are generated in run mode. This saves panel space and component cost.
Q3. How do I select the right model for my motor?
The SSW900 covers 10-1400 A, corresponding to 6-1000 HP at 380 V. Selection requires: (1) application or load type (pump, fan, compressor, conveyor, crusher); (2) motor nameplate data (rated power, current, voltage, poles); (3) the torque-versus-speed load curve; (4) load inertia; (5) supply voltage; (6) maximum number of starts per hour; (7) installation environment conditions; (8) control voltage. Provide these and we can complete the selection for you.
Q4. What does "no derating at 55 °C" mean? Do I need to oversize in a hot workshop?
The SSW900 requires no current derating up to 55 °C ambient, so you can select directly on motor rated current. Note however that overload rating varies by current class: models ≤412 A are rated AC-53b 3-30:330 at 55 °C, while models ≥480 A are rated AC-53b 3-30:690 at 40 °C. If your ambient exceeds 55 °C, apply the WEG derating curve.
Q5. Which communication protocols are supported?
Bluetooth and USB are on board (front-panel USB). Optional modules add RS485, Anybus DeviceNet, PROFIBUS-DP, EtherNet/IP, Modbus-TCP and PROFINET IO. Embedded SoftPLC also allows logic programming on board.
Q6. What is the difference between 3-cable and 6-cable (inside-delta) connection?
Three-cable is the standard connection, with the contactor and thyristors in series between supply and motor. Six-cable (inside-delta) connection opens the motor winding delta point and inserts the thyristors into each phase winding, so the same frame can drive a larger motor - for example a 130 A model is rated 130 A in 3-cable and 225 A in 6-cable. The 6-cable overload rating is expressed differently though (AC-53b 3-25:335 for models ≤412 A), and it only applies to motors with all six winding ends brought out. State which connection you intend to use when ordering.
