MELSERVO-J4: High-Precision Servo System for Global Industrial Automation
MELSERVO-J4: High-Precision Servo System
The MELSERVO-J4 is a high-precision servo system engineered for global industrial automation applications. Boasting an innovative high-speed servo control architecture that delivers a 2.5kHz response frequency, coupled with a high-resolution absolute position encoder supporting 4,194,304 pulses per revolution, it enables both high-speed, precise operation and smooth rotational performance. This system integrates intelligent features including one-touch tuning, Advanced Vibration Suppression Control Ⅱ, and robust filters, which automatically adjust servo gains, suppress vibrations across multiple frequency bands, and expand the scope and quantity of mechanical resonance suppression filters—effectively cutting equipment tuning time and enhancing trajectory control accuracy. Fully compliant with global industrial standards such as IEC/EN, the MELSERVO-J4 is ideally suited for diverse sectors including semiconductor manufacturing, robotics, CNC machine tools, and packaging machinery.
Product Features
  • High-Precision Control Core: Equipped with a 22-bit high-resolution absolute position encoder supporting 4,194,304 pulses per revolution, combined with a 2.5kHz high-speed response frequency, to achieve precise positioning and smooth rotation.
  • Intelligent Vibration Suppression: Integrates Advanced Vibration Suppression Control Ⅱ and robust filters. It can suppress two types of low-frequency vibrations simultaneously, and the applicable range of the mechanical resonance suppression filter is extended to 10Hz-4500Hz.
  • Easy Commissioning & Operation: Supports one-touch tuning function to automatically adjust servo gains and response settings. Paired with MR Configurator2 software, it simplifies calibration, diagnosis, and parameter configuration processes.
  • Flexible System Compatibility: Compatible with rotary motors, linear motors, and direct-drive motors. It supports single-axis, dual-axis, and three-axis amplifier configurations, and can achieve ultra-large capacity output of 110kW-220kW through parallel drive.
  • High-Speed & Stable Communication: Supports SSC Net Ⅲ/H fully synchronous communication with a command communication cycle as low as 0.222ms. It is compatible with industrial networks such as CC-Link IE Field Network Basic, featuring strong anti-interference performance.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting
Q: The drive throws AL.E6 overload fault right after startup, and the motor won't turn. What's wrong?
A: It's mostly mechanical jamming or overloaded load. First, power off and manually rotate the load shaft to check for abnormal resistance—inspect guide rail/ball screw lubrication and coupling concentricity. Then check if the inertia ratio exceeds 15 times; if yes, reduce the load or switch to a higher-power motor. Also, the overload threshold in parameters might be set too low—use MR Configurator2 to reset PA05 to the default 150%.
Q: AL.52 encoder error pops up suddenly during operation, and the motor stops abruptly. How to fix it?
A: First check the encoder cable—cables in drag chains are prone to breakage, replace it with a high-flexibility shielded cable (H type). Then clean the encoder connector to remove oil stains and re-plug it firmly. If that doesn't work, reset the encoder with PA03=1001. If the fault persists, the encoder is probably damaged and needs replacement.
Q: The motor vibrates and makes loud noise during operation, especially at high speeds. How to solve this?
A: First check the mechanics—see if bearings are worn or lubrication is sufficient; replenish grease every 50,000 cycles. Then adjust parameters: lower the rigidity parameter Pr0.07 slightly and run the one-click auto-tuning in MR Configurator2 for optimization. If resonance is obvious, enable the vibration suppression function, and check the load inertia matching degree at the same time.
Q: AL.20 main circuit undervoltage fault is triggered frequently, but the measured power supply voltage is normal. Why?
A: It's mostly caused by loose power cables or insufficient wire gauge, which leads to large voltage drop under high current. Inspect if the main circuit terminals are oxidized or loose, and replace the cables with thicker ones. In addition, add a voltage stabilizer or reactor if the power grid fluctuates a lot—it can reduce such alarms effectively.
Q: The drive gets extremely hot and even throws overheating warning (91.1). What to do?
A: First check heat dissipation—ensure the heat sink is free of dust and well-ventilated, don't mount it too close to other heat-generating equipment. Then check if the cooling fan is working; replace it if it's broken. If the drive runs at full load for a long time, optimize the motion curve to reduce continuous overload duration, or increase the overload threshold appropriately (but don't exceed the limit too much).
Q: Communication with PLC keeps dropping and AL.8D CC-Link IE communication error is reported. How to troubleshoot?
A: First verify communication parameters—baud rate, station number must match those of the PLC. Then check the communication cable: use shielded cables, keep them away from high-voltage lines, and ground both ends properly. Finally, check the firmware versions—update both the drive and PLC firmware to the latest, and try replacing the communication module if the problem still exists.
Q: The motor runs but can't position accurately, with repeated position deviations. How to fix it?
A: First check mechanical backlash—see if the ball screw or gearbox is worn; adjust or replace them if needed. Then calibrate the encoder and perform origin return with MR Configurator2. In addition, check if the pulse command is lost—add a ferrite core filter if there's strong interference, and ensure the shielded cable is grounded correctly.
Q: The regenerative resistor always gets overheated and even burns out. How to solve this?
A: This is caused by excessive regenerative energy during deceleration. First confirm if the regenerative resistor power is sufficient—replace it with a higher-power one if not. Then check parameter Pn600 and set the regenerative braking function correctly. For loads with frequent start-stop or large inertia, add a regenerative braking unit—it will work much better.
