[Step-by-Step Guide] Seamlessly Migrating from Siemens S7-1200 G1 to the New S7-1200 G2 Platform

2026-04-28
Latest company news about [Step-by-Step Guide] Seamlessly Migrating from Siemens S7-1200 G1 to the New S7-1200 G2 Platform

With the official phase-out of the S7-1200 G1 announced for late 2026, many automation engineers are shifting their focus to the SIMATIC S7-1200 G2. But how do you move your existing, complex programs to the new hardware without starting from scratch?

Migration doesn't have to be a headache. In this guide, we break down the Three-Step Migration Protocol to help you transition your projects smoothly, ensuring your machine downtime is kept to an absolute minimum.

Phase 1: Preparation & Compatibility Check

Before you click "Migrate," you must ensure your software and hardware environments are ready for the G2 era.

  • Software Version: The S7-1200 G2 requires TIA Portal V20 or higher. You cannot configure G2 hardware in V19 or older versions. Ensure your engineering station is updated.
  • Hardware Audit: Check your current G1 configuration. While the G2 is designed to be backward compatible in form factor, some specialized Signal Boards (SB) or older Communication Modules (CM) may require updated G2-specific versions.
  • Memory Mapping: Remember that G2 has a different memory structure (expanded Data and Program memory). Review your "Retentive Data" settings to ensure they align with the new CPU’s specs.
Phase 2: The 3-Step Project Migration
Step 1: Upgrade the Project Version

Open your existing G1 project in TIA Portal V20. The software will prompt you to upgrade the project to the latest version. This is the foundation—ensure all library elements and global data blocks are updated during this process.

Step 2: "Change Device" Implementation

Right-click your G1 CPU in the Project Tree and select "Change Device."

  • Navigate to the S7-1200 G2 catalog and select the corresponding CPU (e.g., if you used a 1214C DC/DC/DC G1, select the 1214C G2 equivalent).
  • Pro Tip: TIA Portal will attempt to map your I/O addresses automatically. However, you must manually verify the Hardware Identifier and Profinet Device Name to prevent network conflicts.
Step 3: Compile and Logic Adaptation

Once the hardware is swapped, run a "Compile > Software (rebuild all)."

  • Motion Control: If your project uses Motion Control Technology Objects (TO), you may see errors. Since G2 supports advanced Kinematics, you might need to update your TO versions to the new G2 standards.
  • Web API & Security: Review the "Protection & Security" tab. G2 has stricter default security settings (ISA/IEC 62443). You may need to enable specific access rights for HMI or Web API communication.
Phase 3: Critical Precautions (The "Don'ts")

To avoid project failure, keep these three points in mind:

  1. Don’t ignore the Firmware: Ensure your new G2 hardware is running the latest firmware before downloading. Mismatched firmware can cause "Stop" states that are hard to diagnose.
  2. Watch the Power Budget: G2 CPUs and their advanced features (like NFC and faster processing) may have slightly different power consumption profiles. Re-calculate your 24V DC load if you are using many expansion modules.
  3. Check Third-Party GSD Files: If you are using non-Siemens sensors or drives via Profinet, ensure their GSDML files are compatible with the updated TIA Portal environment.
Summary: Why Migrate Now?

Migrating to S7-1200 G2 isn't just about avoiding obsolescence; it's about unlocking Motion Kinematics, NFC diagnostics, and doubled processing speed.

Wishing you smooth procurement!
